I just don't get the obsession with online poker. It seems to be the most popular card game online and offline as well. Maybe it's because I don't know that much about it, but it just never interested me all that much. Can anyone explain the hype?

While I have never played online poker as we know it, I did once play a computer version of 5-card draw when I owned an Apple IIe. It was fun for a while, but eventually I tired of it...well, to be honest, I got tired of being beaten 75% of the time.
As for the hype...I think it's because poker is so entrenched in the culture. Just think of all the westerns and tough-guy movies from the old days where poker is featured. I think that's part of poker's appeal.

Could be but that doesn't explain the addictive factor. Seems like Poker sucks people in more than any other card game. Could be that they are addicted to the gambling aspect too.

*recalls some scenes from many films..*
well.. perhaps.. poker is interesting because of that 'poker face'
i should bring someone who is really living the culture anyway.. none of us seem to know about it anyway.

Dunno, maybe it's about card management, but the main attraction is winning money the easy way, i think. Besides, there's some kind of satisfaction feel when you can beat several opponents [and, in addition to that, gain prizes]

I don't play online as much. I usually play with a few friends. If I get bored I'll enter a tournment on yahoo or something. I'm not the best but sometimes I managed to do ok.

Well I don't know to much about online poker myself, but I've heard that a lot of people are winning money playing free rolls. I guess there has to be some stakes in keeping people motivated to play. You don't win really big money bu the more you play, the more it adds up.

Hello !
I played sometimes poker for free (because I don't want to waste my money...;)), and I quite like to watch poker on TV (try to watch the World Poker Tour). It's No Limit Hold'hem, a very exciting and dangerous type of poker.
Of course, the main reason for playing poker is to make money, but the psychological nature of the game is very interesting : when a good player can force another one (with a better hand than his) to fold, this is a geat moment !
They are only few good players who can win a lot of money (in the main poker tournaments), but with the web, many players can win the due to enter a great poker tournament.
The most famous exemple is a man called Chris Moneymaker (it's his real name !!!), who has won on internet for a few dollars ( I think it's 20) the due to enter one of the world poker tour's game. He won the tournament and so more than a million dollars...but he was very lucky and played rather well.
So be careful and don't ply poker for money (except if you're pretty good at it !), you risk to lose a lot of money !

It's all about the money money money. If you are good you can win big bucks and you can win it fast. Now I don't know if that works with online poker, but in real life wouldn't you be addicted to something that can bring you in $500 or more in less than an hour ?:p
